Přelet nad Grónskem

Trasa Praha - Frankfurt - Chicago - Albany měla alespoň tu výhodu, že jsme letěli nad Grónskem. Přes špinavé okýnko letadla jsem vyfotil následujícíh pár foto...

Fotky to bohužel nezachytí (a ještě navíc skrze špinavé okýnko), ale ty skály skutečně vypadaly skoro "na dosah". Výškoměr však ukazoval 11 km!

Albany

Pár obrázků z Albany, shodou okolností jednoho z nejhistoričtějších měst v USA (napíšu o tom něco podrobnějšího později

Centrání komplex v uptown campusu, vévodí mu věž s hodinami, která vypadá jako maják

...který sídlí v poměrně hezkých historických budovách

Centrála SUNY (State University of New York), která má po celém státě 65 kampusů - zde se to vše koordinuje

Hned kousek od našeho bytu je údajně první luteránský kostel v USA

Tohle je dům Bryana a Janet u kterých jsem dočasně bydlel v Delmaru, obce poblíž Albany

Náš byt

Foto mých tří spolubydících, pár fotek z našeho bytu po té, co jsme jej vybavili nábytkem a různými skvělými věcmi z výprodejů:-)

...není velký, ale má výhodu "vestavěné skříně"

Tento děsně kýčovitý věnec jsme dostali v jedné garage sale zadarmo. Původně jsme ho chtěli někomu dát, ale nakonec jsme si ho nechali

Fotky z průvodu amerických Italů (nebo italských Američanů?) po naší ulici a z Washington Parku

Příchod do parku přes křižovatku - tohle je snad Military Academy, nebo tak něco...

Průvod procházel přes takové "náměstíčko" v parku

...protože se zpívá hymna:-) Honorace (zřejmě lokální politici) na pódiu nešetří patriotismem:-)

Potom tento chlapík zpívá Italskou hymnu. Divné je, že se k němu honorace otočila zády? Asi aby mohli koukat na vlajku:-)

Podzimní nálada

Pár fotek s podzimní tématikou. No nevyfoťte to, když ty barvy jsou tak krásné:-)

Zase ten nejstarší Luteránský kostel, já za to nemůžu, že je cestou do školy...

Mamma Mia

Přes studentskou asociaci SUNY jsme sehnali levné lístky na muzikál Mama Mia a musím říci, že mě nadchl!

konečně se mi podařilo dostat fotky z mobilu (nic moc kvalita, ale poslouží občas k zachycení kouzla okamžiku:-).

Drive-thru banka:-) Zajedete tam, ani nemusíte vylézt z auta...

Albany public library v autobusu:-o Pochopil bych to na vesnici, ale tenhle bus stíál přímo vedle NY State Assembly...

Cheerleaders předváděli docela zajímavé akrobatické kousky

Koncert RHCP, aspoň světla byly dobrý...

Dostal se ke mně jakousi náhodou email o prý tradiční americké události ke konci pozimní sezóny, tak jsem si řekl proč se nepodívat...

První atrakcí po příjezdu na farmu byly koně

A potom králíčci, jééééééééééé!!! Soooo cuuuute:-)

Ne, tímhle. No není to úplně romantika vozů plných sena taženým koňmi, jak jsem si představoval, ale OK:-)

Nasedat na vozy, no toho sena tam taky není úplně moc...

Cestou jsou na stromech rozvěšená "strašidla"

Tohle bylo celkem vtipný, vznášelo se na levitující židli...

Tak tohle jsem nečekal: starý dobrý žhavouš!

...a svařeného jablečného moštu - svařák to není, ale zahřeje (byla děsná kosa)

Tak děti, ještě neopékat, musíme se nejdřív pomodlit (organizovala to nějaká křesťanská organizace)

Kuleho teorém platí i zde: poloměr kruhu stojících lidí lze regulovat pomocí množství dříví v ohni

No a nechali jsme se ukecat i k české písničce:-)

"Zelnacka" party

Baltimore (MD)

Vydal jsem se navštívit spolužačku ze základky Míšu s půldenním stopoverem v Baltimore. Je tam pár věcí k vidění, hlavně přístav s válečnou plachetnicí Constellation a další...

Jestli bydlel fakt tady, tak se nedivím, že psal tak depresivně...

Kdybyste to náhodou nevěděli, tak je WORLD FAMOUS:-)))

Při sobotní procházce po Mallu bylo krásně a svítilo sluníčko, ačkoli byla již půlka listopadu! Aspoň se dalo fotit:-)

Pamětihodnosti Albany: Museum a Capitol

Albany je sice celkem nudné město, a člověk by ani neřekl, že tu má celkem zajímavé atrakce přímo pod nosem... O víkendu jsme se vydali do Musea a Capitolu

A pod tím náměstím z prvního obrázku je gigantický podzemní concourse, který byl ale v sobotu skoro úplně prázdný

Černošský magazín z 20. let, kdy se zřejmě ještě běžně používalo slovo "negro"

Turistická kancelář bylo jediné místo, kde byli nějaký lidi...

Vchod z povrchu není možný, musí se z concoursu podzemní chodbou:-)

Tady je vidět, jak Teddy Roosevelt ukončil stavbu, i když dekorace ještě nebyly hotovy

St. Patrick's Day byl minulý týden, ale kvůli sněhu se "přehlídka" přesunula o týden později - na dnešek. Městem prošel průvod, ale nebylo to nijak zakončeno nějakým koncertem nebo tak něco, takže nakonec nic moc...

V čele průvodu jedou poliši na motorkách

Hasiči byli lidmi nejvíce oblíbení - dávali jim největší aplaus

US vojáci měli po hasičích druhý nejvyšší aplaus

Senátor (federální) za NY - C. E. Schumer - přijel pozdravit Iry (druhá je Hillary, ale ta nepřišla)

Konference v Naval Academy skončila v pátek ráno, takže jsem se na víkend opět nakýbloval k Mišce a Joshovi do DC. V sobotu jsme vyrazili na výlet do Shenandoah National Park

Foto z akcí z poslední doby: Japan Night, které šéfoval náš spolubydla Masa, Tulip Festival - openair festiválek v Albany s hlavní hvězdou punkrockerkou Joan Jett a nakonec nakládka kontejneru pro Honduras

Cestou na fest kolem mě proběhlo asi sto lidí v červených šatech (ženských i chlapů), co to znamenalo jsem nezjistil.

Už jí táhne na padesát, ale pořád jí to šlape:-) Byla nějakou dobu low-profile, ale jak jsem pochopil, nyní má jakýsi comeback

V publiku se rvali nějací ožralové, ale když přijela kavalérie, tak toho rychle nechali:-)

I love rock'n'roll! (její největší hit, určitě to znáte!)

Tak tohle všechno tam máme narvat? Kola se nakonec nevešla... Příště snad...

Při rvaní věcí do kontejneru je třeba využít každou skulinku...

Trip to Adirondacks

Adirondacks is a mountain range in upstate New York, north from Albany. I've heard about it before, but never had chance to go there. Thus, when I found out that my roommate Sandy was going there for a day hike, I gladly joined

Mt. Algonquin is our first destination. It's only three miles, but 3000 feet (=1000 m) elevation change!

...and enjoying amazing views. Adirondacks really are beautiful!

...but after a while the ascent changed to a quite steep rock

Now we are almost at the top - entering the Arctic-Alpine zone, a rare phenomenon at this latitude and the only one in New York state

The route to the top is now marked with these "pyramids"

The views are really stunning - river bend

Hills and forests as far as you can see...

Time to move to a near smaller peak - through annoying bushes...

But we are rewarded by more views: Mt Algonquin from which we just came here

Los Angeles

The two and half days at the beginning of our trip were just enough time to see Hollywood and Beverly Hills, to grab a lunch in Little Tokyo and Chinatown and to visit the still cool (as in temperature) beaches in St. Monica and Venice. On the way back at the end of our roadtrip we drove along Mullholland drive and had some night view. LA was however constantly under fog, so pictures are not very nice:-/ We also visited two interesting museums

The pavement with stars was a disappointment, we expected some broad pedestrian boulevard, but it's just a street like any other, with stars at the sidewalk. Nothing special, really...

Here you can take picture with Hollywood sign without actually going there;-)

The pink Beverly Hills Hotel built in 1912, many celebrities like Marlene Dietrich, Humphrey Bogart or Katharine Hepburn stayed here

University of California in LA has its campus in BH

Mulholland drive is basically a very very long road winding through hills above LA (on the way back we drove from No 32000 down to 6000)

Hollywood sign was not visible very well, at night it got a little bit better, but still nothing special

...Japanese Village Plaza is the official name

She might - truckloads of sushi are readily available

It's hard to choose which one to get first.

If you grow tired of sushi, Cuban food is right across the street

Let's get lunch first. Shoko has her favorite meal: fish

China town stretches along one main street

It's not much different from Vietnamese market in Prague...

Statue of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, the "founder of modern China"

But further down it gets more specifically Chinese...

At the beach: you can do many things here, like...

Bubba Gump shrimp company - established only after the movie Forrest Gump to capitalize on its success

This one even has a car parked, let's wait for a while, maybe we'll spot...

you can surf (BTW, if you notice the pier in the background? It is the Venice beach Pier where the final scene of the movie Falling Down starring Michal Douglas was shot:-)

or you can even play in the (really cold) water if you are tough like this girl

We first headed to the Southwest Museum of American Indian, but it is under reconstruction till 2009 or so, so they sent us to their sister museum of American West. Girls at least took picture with this totem:-)

On the way we stopped in Travel Town in Griffith Park, which is basically a railway museum, something for Madal:-)

There are different engines that ran trains in the Wild West

Stars can be five, six or even seven-pointed

Typical wagon for West explorers included foldable kitchenette

Manually propelled personal vehicles for use on the railway

Famous statue "End of the Trail" by J. E. Fraser from 1915, symbolizing the victory of white man over natives: nowehere to run anymore, the West has been conquered. One of the most popular and most copied statues in US (I can confirm that, I've seen it many times)

After that we came to the Museum of the American West. This painting depicts the "Spirit of the West" in somewhat romanticized way...

Meat was plentiful, until bisons were nearly exterminated

Indians were exterminated together with bisons, this whisky ad shows Custer's heroic charge on the savages :-/ What did they mean by that? If you drink whisky you will become a hero? Or if you drink whisky, you can be easily slaughtered?

California Stagecoach - luxurious upgrade

Chinese food = Comida China. You must be bilingual here or you lose half of customers

Palm Springs

On the way from LA to Joshua Tree National Park we stayed overnight in Palm Springs, a pleasant resort in the middle of California deserts.

The desert is dry, but windy - wind generators are everywhere

It's maybe environmentally friendly, but definitely it totally destroys the horizon:-/

Our car - we rented it, didn't buy it, so we didn't name it as in Australia or NZ

Joshua Tree National Park

Very nice desert NP in the desert at the border of Colorado and Mojave deserts, with unique trees, rocky formations, surprising variety of wildlife and many walking trails.

First few Joshua Trees, after which the park was named;-)

Trees and rocks make some amazing sceneries

Joshua trees are about the only things that provide some shade

I didn't bring falling pad so I only went as high as this:-)

These are a bit boring, but there are some other:

Joshua Tree park is very popular for climbers - these even bring their own falling pads

The Skull Rock - looks like skull but only from afar

Such as desert tortoise. The guide said it's rare so we were apparently lucky to see it. Credit goes to Imelda, who spotted it first!

...a blue bird flew to us and started searching for some crumbs. Sorry mate, feeding wildlife is banned

But if you are careful, cactus can be very beautiful like this one...

So where do we go next? There seem to be some diagreements among the crew...

Finally we found the Barker Dam - swimming (in the sand?) is forbidden...

So there is a dam, after all! In the middle of desert! That explains how come there could be so much wildlife

Time to head back: don't forget to drink a lot of water! Yes, sir!

In a heroic attempt to shoot the rabbit (with camera!), Imel stumbled and sat on this: ouch! Fortunately she sustained no permanent injuries:-)

Route 66

Travelling towards Grand Canyon along the "Mother Road" - Route 66. It was in fact not as exciting as we expected, but some parts were nice:-) We only travelled a short stretch, though...

Route 66 goes all the way from LA to Chicago. We went only the tiny stretch between Amboy and Williams

Freight train, freight train, goin' so fast

Big mistake many make, rely on horn instead of brake

This guy probably knows something about it...

Ice-cold Coke would come in handy, it was well over 100 degrees (F = 37 C)

This beauty is just decoration. Too bad, otherwise we'd have changed it for out car;-)

Grand Canyon

You've seen it on TV, you've seen it in cinema, you've seen it in magazines. You know exactly what to expect. Yet, when the Canyon unfolds in front of you in its sheer vastness, it's gonna get you anyway. Guaranteed:-)
